Wairoa is the main town of Northern Hawkes Bay and is the gateway to Lake Waikaremoana, Mahia Peninsula and the wilderness of Te Urewera. Wairoa in Maori means ‘Long Water’ and is located on the banks of the expansive Wairoa River, which provides an excellent and sheltered venue for water-skiing, jet boating and rowing.
Part of Northern Hawke's Bay, the Mahia Peninsula is surrounded by the deep blue and crystal clear Pacific Ocean, which breaks onto a mix of black and white sandy and rocky beaches. Mahia is a 45 minute drive north from Wairoa, Hawkes Bay’s northern most town. It is a mecca for outdoor activities like fishing, diving, kayaking and surfing.
Te Urewera, in Northern Hawke’s Bay, is a gateway to Te Urewera and Lake Waikaremoana. The drive from Wairoa to Waikaremoana is about 65km, some of it over gravel roads. Te Urewera, the spiritual land of Ngai Tuhoe, is New Zealand’s largest remaining tract of native forest in the North Island
Mahanga is a white sandy beach, great for walking, collecting shells and beach fishing. This is also a great beach for boogie boarding. It is possible to walk around to Oraka Beach but you need to be aware of the tides. There are several streams here which have whitebait in them. Remember that this is a seasonal fishing activity (15 August - 30 November).
