All That Jazz!

Octavius NZ Choir gave a concert in Dannevirke in October 2023. Anyone who attended that concert will agree with the reviewer of that event, who described the concert as “a sublime performance……a show not to be missed!” And they will be pleased to hear that the choir is making a return visit to Dannevirke this year on Sunday March 23rd.
Octavius is a Napier-based choir led by Anthony Tattersall, a musician known for his wide-ranging contributions to choral music in Hawke’s Bay. He is the Director of Music at Waiapu Cathedral and formed Octavius Choir in 2017, modelled on a similar group which he directed in the UK before emigrating to New Zealand.

With just a dozen singers, Octavius NZ Choir has become well-known for beautiful harmonies, talented soloists, and lively, varied concert programs. In this concert, they will present an eclectic selection of music from the 1920s - 1940s: the era when jazz music and dance styles began in the USA and gained worldwide popularity. The songs and tunes sung and played by artists like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington are still loved today.
The Octavius singers might say I Got Rhymn but they Ain't misbehavin'! Maybe they feel like floating Over the Rainbow to find Someone to Watch over Me? Or are they expecting to meet a Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy or even Mack the Knife? Those with a more romantic heart might prefer a Funny Valentine or Mister Sandman, but we all know that, in the end, It Had to be You. These are just some of the fabulous songs which Octavius will present in St. John’s Anglican church on Sunday March 23rd. starting at 3 pm. The entry price - just $20 for adults - includes a light afternoon tea after the show, provided by the church community. All are welcome - and bring a friend!
