Te Hokinga Mahara o Waipureku Waitangi.
Join us to commemorate the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi at Te Awa o Mokotuararo (Clive), Hawke's Bay! This historic event, close to where Te Tiriti was signed in 1840, promises a day of reflection and action. Turn up anytime during the day at Farndon Park to join in this free commemoration. All welcome.
Starting at 7:45 am at Atea a Rangi, Waitangi Park, with karakia, followed by a Hikoi of Unity to Farndon Park. Bring your flags.
Haka powhiri at 8:45 am, led by mana whenua, followed by speeches from our local mayors and a keynote address from leading New Zealand historian Vincent O'Malley. Waka, small boats and fluttering flags will provide the backdrop to talks by law lecturer Dr Carwyn Jones, te reo champion Dr Jeremy Tātere MacLeod, former Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson and others. Both O'Malley and MacLeod will appear in person and other speakers will appear via video.
After the speeches and morning tea, Napier Pilot City Trust chair Mark Cleary will facilitate a workshop and creation of an action plan on ‘honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi now and in the future.’
The event will conclude by 2pm.
